Transplant id symposium - review

The Transplant ID Program and the UHN Transplant Program were pleased to host the first Transplant Infectious Diseases symposium at The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and learning. The event was attended by well over 100 clinicians, researchers and students who enjoyed lectures from pioneering investigators, who are blazing a trail in the modern clinical and research landscape of Transplant Infectious Diseases.
 
The event included presentations from some of UHN’s best such as Dr. Atul Humar, Dr. Coleman Rotstein, Dr. Deepali Kumar and Dr. Shahid Husain. We had both national and international experts in the field present on a variety of ID related topics. Invited nationally were Dr. Jordan Feld and Dr. Ted Marras from University of Toronto, Dr. Greg Knoll who came from Ottawa and Dr. Me-Linh Luong from Montreal.
 
Internationally we were graced with talks by Dr. Jose Camargo from Miami, Dr. Lara Danziger-Isakov from Cincinnati and Dr. Robin Patel who came to us from the MAYO Clinic in Rochester, New York.
 
Dr. Nina Singh from the University of Pittsburgh gave a visionary talk regarding the novel ideas of palliogenesis of CMV infection, as well as the delicate balance between inflammation and immune reconstitution highlighting the future areas of research in Transplant Infectious Disease.
 
As we were also celebrating the 10th anniversary of our global fellowship program, we had many previously graduated fellows who came from across Canada, United States and even some as far as Japan! They not only attended but also contributed to the lecture program by presenting unique patient cases, lectures and spearheading discussions during the symposium.
 
Following the success and rave reviews of the event, we are excited to do even better at our next symposium planned for 2020. Stay tuned!
